LUDHIANA: Fortis Ludhiana pioneered the first advanced HIPEC (Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy) procedure in the city, by successfully treating a 65 years old patient afflicted with a rare abdominal cancer, termed pseudomyoma peritonii. The cancer was previously deemed untreatable.

Department of Surgical Oncology led by Dr Anish Bhatia and Medical Oncology led by Dr Davinder Paul achieved this feat. Dr Anish Bhatia stated that the advanced HIPEC procedure using latest HIPEC machine was performed for the first time in Ludhiana city, in which entire cancerous tissue is removed, with chemotherapy being delivered at high temperature in the abdominal cavity locally. Dr Davinder Paul stated the advantage of HIPEC that it improves absorption and prevents toxic effects elsewhere and hence intense dose can be administered. The patient after being discharged within a week, is now fully recovered. Studies have also claimed overall potential betterment of survival.
