MOHALI: The CBI court here today awarded six years of rigrous imprisonment to Raka Ghirra dismissed DSP of Punjab police in a bribery case of 2011. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs.two lakhs on her. It took 12 years to complete the trial in the corruption case.
She was convicted under sections 7 of and sections 13 (1) (d) punishable under 13 (2) of the Prevent of Corruption Act by the CBI court on February 5.
When in 2011 Ghirra was arrested by CBI, she was DSP in Mohali. The CBI laid a trap at her sector 15, Chandigarh residence on the basis of a complaint of a realtor Krishan Kumar Malhotra. She had demanded Rs.2 lakh to sattle the five cases registered against the complainant. She was banned while accepting first instalment of the bribe money.
Ghirra was recruited as an inspector in the Punjab Police in 2001 on compassionate grounds after the death of her husband, DSP in Punjab Jail department. She was promoted as DSP in 2007.
CBI had also seized sophisticated arms and ammunition from her residence, including a .32-bore German revolver and a double-barrel gun, along with multiple cartridges. But she was acquitted in the arms seizure case in 2019 due to lack of evidence.
