Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney to Promote Scientific Temper Among Students
AMRITSAR: The Festival of Science at Khalsa College, Amritsar was inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar, Ms. Sakshi Sawhney. This three-day Vigyan Mela is the result of collaborative efforts by the Society for Promotion of Science & Technology in India (SPSTI), the Punjab State Council for Science & Technology (PSCST), and the District Administration of Amritsar.
The event aims to spark students’ interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) by bringing these subjects to life through interactive exhibits, engaging activities, and creative competitions.
In her inaugural address, Ms. Sawhney encouraged students to embrace curiosity and logical thinking. She emphasized the importance of creativity in solving global challenges such as climate change, pollution, and public health issues. Dharamvir (Retd. IAS), President of SPSTI, highlighted the transformative role of science and technology in societal development, while Er. Pritpal Singh, Executive Director of PSCST, discussed various initiatives to inculcate scientific temper through STEM education. Prof. Arun K. Grover, former Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University, Chandigarh, paid tribute to the region’s eminent scientists who have significantly contributed to the field of Science & Technology. Dr. Mehal Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Khalsa University, Amritsar, stressed the need to revive and replicate traditional, eco-friendly practices that align with sustainable development goals. Notable dignitaries in attendance included Ms. Gursimranjit Kaur Sekhon, Assistant Commissioner, Amritsar; Prof. Keya Dharamvir, General Secretary, SPSTI; Dr. K.S. Bath, Joint Director, PSCST; Dr. Nitin Maurya, Scientist, National Innovation Foundation, Government of India; and Harbhagwant Singh Waraich, District Education Officer, Amritsar.
The Festival features an array of interactive science exhibits and hands-on activity stalls designed to make science both accessible and exciting. Highlights include the Lab on Wheels and the Circus of Science, both designed to immerse students in STEM education in an engaging and enjoyable manner. Competitions such as a quiz for college students and poster-making for school students are also being organized to foster creativity and innovation.
Over 1, 000 school and college students have already visited the activity corners led by distinguished resource persons. Topics include visual explanations of geometry, health and innovative science, night sky observation, telescope making, robotics and drones, 3D printing, and rocket making and launching. Additional activity corners are being hosted by the Punjab State Climate Change Knowledge Centre, EIACP Hub, and grassroots innovators associated with PSCST.
The event also features a science book exhibition, film screenings, interactions with scientists, and stage shows centered on science, offering a unique educational experience for attendees. Furthermore, local industries from Punjab specializing in handicrafts and health products are showcasing their innovative contributions, highlighting the practical applications of science in daily life.
There will be special sky-watch session held in the night using SPSTI Telescopes.
