In recent times, the number of Indian students travelling to Canada to pursue their higher education has gone up tremendously. Canada is slowly emerging as one of the top destinations for students from India to migrate to in pursuit of world-class educational institutions as well as great career options after completing their studies. Hence, it becomes critical to acquaint ourselves with the system with which your eligibility will be ascertained. A prominent player in the field of overseas migration is Rudraksh Immigration Group in Mohali. It answers a very important question of the method to calculate GPA or CGPA in order to qualify for the Canadian university requirements.

GPA vs CGPA

GPA refers to Grade Point Average and is a prevalent method of calculating the academic performance of a student at the universities in foreign countries including Canada, European countries as well as the USA. CGPA, on the other hand, means Cumulative Grade Point Average. This is something that almost every Indian student must be familiar with. In essence, both these terms inform the academic performance of a student. GPA can range from 0 to 4 or 5.

Generally, GPA can refer to the marks obtained by a student in a particular semester or in a short duration of time. On the other hand, CGPA highlights the performance of a student throughout the entire course. Hence, one can think of expressing his or her performance in a semester using GPA while the overall marks scored in a degree or diploma program will need to be expressed in terms of CGPA. Nevertheless, each university can have its own set of rules to determine GPA and CGPA. CGPA is calculated on a scale of 0 to 10.

How to calculate GPA and CGPA?

Depending on the grade you scored in a particular subject, you will be awarded a GPA score for it. You will then need to multiply that score by the number of credit hours for that subject. Doing this for all subjects, adding them up and dividing by the total number of subjects will give you the total GPA for that semester. Adding all these up and dividing by the total number of credit hours will give you the CGPA for the entire course.

While this is one formula to calculate GPA and CGPA, you must understand that each university can have its internal method to calculate both these parameters. Hence, it becomes critical to directly contact the administration staff at the university and get the formula that a particular university uses. Hopefully, this blog will give you a tentative idea of how to go about it. For specifics, contact the university staff.
