MOHALI: A webinar on “Role of Geographical Information System & Remote Sensing" was organised at Aryans Group of Colleges, Rajpura, Near Chandigarh. Dr. Akhlaq Amin Wani, Associate Professor, Natural Resource Management, Sher- e- Kashmir University of Agriculture Science & Technology (SKUAST), Jammu & Kashmir interacted with the Aryans students of B. Sc. Agriculture, Diploma Agriculture, B.Tech & Polytechnic . Dr. Anshu Kataria, Chairman, Aryans group presided over the event.

Wani while interacting said that droughts, floods, swarms of insects and poor farming techniques have plagued the agricultural community for centuries. Improvements have been made to insure the safety and gain of crops worldwide and yet these factors and many more continue to make or break individuals and communities affected by them, he added.

He further said that GIS are incredibly helpful in being able to map and project current and future fluctuations in precipitation, temperature, crop output, and more. GIS can analyze soil data combined with historical farming practices to determine what the best crops to plant, are where they should go, and how to maintain soil nutrition levels to best benefit the plants, highlighted Wani.

While answering student questions he said that one of the most important functions of GIS is to raise awareness about food scarcity. It allows us to visualize, analyze and understand the vast geographic data that is being stored and collected. It can now be easily communicated which crops are flourishing, the extent that pollution and natural disasters hinder production control the use of fertilizers etc., he highlighted.
