Congress-SAD leaders clash over control of cash rich truck unions in Punjab

CHANDIGARH: The control of cash rich truck unions in Punjab has sparked clashes between SAD and Congress leaders in Punjab. After death of two office bearers of truck union at Bareta in Mansa district on March 12, the reports of fresh clashes are reported today from Mansa, Amritsar and Fazilka.

The control of truck unions changes with the change of government. The truck unions are controlled by henchmen of ruling political party since they are big source of funding of political activities of local leaders.

The truck unions in the state were under the control of leaders aligned to SAD which ruled the state for ten years. After Congress returned to power, the Congress leaders have started taking forcible control of truck union with tactical suport from the eastablishment.

Tension previalied in Amritsar and Fazilka where Congress leaders forcibly occupied the office of truck unions.The police force has been deployed to avert bloody clash and smooth shift of control.

A report said that control of Abohar truck Union has been taken over by Congress leader Babbu Nagpal without any resistant from Akali Dal leaders.

On March 12 last, two office beartes of truck union Bareta in Mansa district owing allegiance to the Shiromani Akali Dal were shot dead by Congress men in a bid to take control of the union.

The sources said that the truck union president of Mansa was also murdered after a change in regime as SAD-BJP combine had come to power in the state in 2007.
