WASHINGTON: In a pivotal meeting held by delegates from the World Sikh Parliament (WSP), including representatives from the United Nations (UN) and the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Council, the unwavering commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Sikhs globally was underscored.
On December 7, 2023, at Washington D.C., members Balwinder Singh Chatha and Udam Singh, representing the WSP alongside delegates from the UN and NGO Council, actively participated in crucial events advocating for the protection and empowerment of Sikh communities worldwide.
Their proactive involvement in the senate hearing on the transnational repression bill highlighted the collective dedication to advocating for legislative measures that combat transnational oppression. This collaborative effort emphasized the urgent need to address and prevent instances where individuals face suppression transcending international borders.
Additionally, their participation in the International Religious Freedom event shed light on the pervasive persecution and discrimination faced by Sikhs, particularly in Indian-occupied Punjab. Through a comprehensive submission of reports from the IRF Ambassador of the U.S. State Department, they brought attention to the challenges and adversities encountered by Sikhs, aiming to catalyze global awareness and action.
Importantly, they raised awareness about numerous incidents where Sikhs have encountered transnational repression orchestrated by India on a global scale. This joint effort sought to highlight the broader issue of cross-border suppression faced by Sikhs, emphasizing the imperative for international attention and intervention.
The collective involvement of WSP members, UN delegates, and representatives from the NGO Council in these critical events underscores their unified dedication to advocating for the rights and safety of Sikhs worldwide. Through collaborative engagement, advocacy, and comprehensive submissions, they strive to ensure that the voices and concerns of the Sikh community are heard and addressed at a global level.
