Self-defence training to city’s girl students starts from next week

CHANDIGARH: With a view to empower girl students not only mentally but also physically so that they can defend themselves by their own at the time of crisis. The Chandigarh Administration has constituted a committee of officials to select trainers trained by the Swayam Team for Self-Defence Training to girl students (Class VI to XII) in city schools.

The Administration has issued letter to this effect No 3282 dated August 7, 2023. The training for trainers is concluded in Chandigarh Police Line, Sector 26 on Monday. The list of selected trainers will be submitted on August 14 and these trainers in self defence will impart training to girl students under Rani Laxami Bai Self-defence Program.

The nodal officer of the training Mr Rajpal Singh told that forty trainers were selected after completion of strenuous training and they would impart training to girl students of 110 government schools of Chandigarh.

The official of the education department told that a budget of Rs 15, 000 per school at both elementary and secondary levels has been allocated for the purpose of self-defence training. The funds will be utilized for honorarium to instructors, module development and training material. The programme aims at empowering girls with self-defence skills and enhancing their safety. Under the initiative, an honorarium of Rs 200 per hour per class for 25 hours will be provided to trainers for Classes VI to VIII, and 18 hours for Classes IX to XII. Additionally, module development at the cluster level will get Rs 600 per school for the preparation of training material.

The principals and school heads have been told to plan and coordinate the activity according to the guidelines. All girl students enrolled in the elementary and secondary classes will undergo the training, which is scheduled to take place from next week.

Tips and lectures on self-defence will be shared with the students through various mediums such as videos and lectures. The training sessions will be supervised by a female staff member. Proper dress code for the girl students during the training should be ensured by the school principal or head.

Department of School Education is implementing the centrally sponsored scheme of Samagra Shiksha, under which self defence training is imparted to girls of classes VI to XII, studying in Government Schools, irrespective of their social categories under Rani Laxumi Bai Self-defence program.
