CHANDIGARH: In line with its ongoing efforts to promote road safety and ensure adherence to traffic regulations, the Chandigarh Traffic Police, under the leadership of Sh. Surendra Singh Yadav, Director General of Police, Sh. Sumer Pratap Singh, SSP/Security & Traffic, and Ms. Niyati Mittal, DSP/Road Safety & Development, organized a Traffic Awareness Session for taxi drivers from Ola, Uber, and other companies. The session took place at the Parking Area in Sector 34, opposite Gurudwara Sahib, Chandigarh.

A total of 55 participants were educated on essential traffic rules and regulations, with a focus on wearing proper uniforms, maintaining lane discipline, and following road signage and traffic signals. Drivers were also sensitized to the dangers of mobile phone use, unnecessary honking, and drunk driving. To reinforce this message, ‘No Honking’ stickers were affixed to taxis and other vehicles.

The awareness team, led by Dr. Parvesh Sharma, Inspector, and in-charge of the Chandigarh Traffic Police (CTP), included ASI Sanjay, ASI Roshni Devi, HC Jagroop Singh, Ct. Manjit, Ct. Harigyan, and volunteer Jagdamba. The team highlighted key provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and its amendments since 1st September 2019, along with the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, and Motor Vehicle Driving Regulations, 2017.

Participants were informed about the importance of adhering to traffic laws, not only for their own safety but also for the safety of passengers and other road users. Emphasis was placed on the proper use of panic buttons for emergency situations, the significance of wearing high-quality helmets, and the need to give way to ambulances and assist injured persons in reaching hospitals. The session also aimed to promote a culture of safe driving habits, with the ultimate goal of making Chandigarh a city with zero road fatalities.

In addition, a one-day refresher course was held at the CTP office in Sector 23, Chandigarh, for drivers whose licenses were seized for dangerous driving violations. Approximately 60 individuals, including those visiting for routine driving license services, were also made aware of road safety regulations. ‘No Honking’ stickers were distributed and affixed to their vehicles, along with informational literature on traffic rules.

Chandigarh Traffic Police urges all citizens to follow traffic regulations diligently to ensure their safety and that of others, contributing to safer roads and a reduction in road traffic fatalities.
