MOHALI: Indian Red Cross Society in association with the National Rehabilitation Institute, organised a symposium on autism at Rayat Bahra University on the occasion of World Mental Health Day. The event aimed to promote awareness, understanding, and inclusive support for individuals with autism. Sakshi Mehta, Director of Alpha school, Dr Umang Jagga , Professor in Dental College and Hospital, RBU, played a key role in organising the symposium.
Gurvinder Singh Bahra, Chancellor of RBU, welcomed the audience and the Chief Guest Dr Sharanjeet Kaur, Chairperson, Rehabilitation Council of India.
Emphasising the importance of collaboration, Dr Kaur said, "Interdisciplinary approaches and community involvement are crucial in addressing autism-related challenges."
Renowned experts deliberated on various aspects of autism, including early intervention and diagnosis, inclusive education and family support and counselling.
Secretary of the State Branch Shivdular Singh Dhillon, and Dr DharamVir, Guests of Honour, also addressed the audience.
The award of appreciation was given to Dr. B. N . S . Walia as Bhisham Pitahma Award for the Excellent services provided by him for the Rehabilitation like Ek Pryas Sector 38 Chandigarh during the last 40 years.
Lifetime Achievement Award was given to the Chief Guest of the event in the memory of Lala Karam Chand, former President of National Rehabilitation Institute.
Bimla Devi & Yashpaul Bhagat also received Lifetime Achievement Award in the Field of Audiology, Speech & Language Pathology.
In the memory of S. Mohinder Singh, Flying Officer of the Air Force, award given to Dr Bhawna Jain and Dr Sandeep Kaur for their outstanding performance in the field of Rehabilitation Services.
The event concluded with a resolve to enhance awareness and acceptance, fosterinclusive environments and support individuals with autism and their families.
Dr Saraswati Gupta, Executive Director of National Rehabilitation Institute, proposed a vote of thanks.
