AMRITSAR: The Department of Psychology at Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) is taking significant steps to address the growing mental health challenges in marginalized and underserved communities. Recognizing the urgent need for mental health awareness, early identification, and access to psychological support, the department has initiated outreach programs in government schools to promote resilience, mental wellness, and coping strategies.
Dr. Rupan Dhillon, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Psychology and Dr. Balbinder Singh, Assistant Professor said that the department conducted a Mental Health Awareness Program at Angels Public School, Roranwala. The session focused on addressing anxiety, depression, and girl empowerment while promoting gender sensitization and personality development. Students were encouraged to openly discuss their concerns, fostering an environment of support and understanding. They said that an engaging program was held at Government Elementary School, Gharinda. This initiative involved students and parents in interactive activities, emphasizing mental health awareness, managing anxiety, and building a balanced approach to education and well-being. Parents participated in discussions on supporting children’s academic and emotional needs.
These programs highlight the department's commitment to improving mental health literacy and access in underserved areas. Stakeholder collaboration, long-term funding, and government support are essential for sustaining such initiatives to ensure no section of society is overlooked.
