A group of Indian Youth Congress (IYC) activists staged a protest while following Covid-19 protocol at namdev chownk (near Eat well) on Thursday against rising prices of petrol & diesel and demanded that the government should roll back the hike with an immediate effect.
Even during the covid crisis where middle class and the poor are already in dire straits and struggling to make both ends meet, the hike in the price of petrol, diesel and LPG cylinders clearly depicts the apathy of the central government towards interest of the common people, the Youth Congress President Angad Datta said.
Certainly the Covid imposed lockdown had put a strain on the wallet of a common man, despite that, the fuel prices have been hiked ten times since May 4, when the state-owned oil companies ended a recess in rate revision that was observed during assembly elections”, he said. He also demanded GST exemption on domestic supplies and commercial import and purchase of COVID-19 drugs, vaccines and oxygen concentrators.
Petrol price on Tuesday was increased by 27 paise per litre and diesel by 29 paise, pushing rates across the country to record highs and that of petrol in Mumbai crossed Rs 99 per litre.
On Wednesday Petrol & diesel Price in Punjab was at Rs. 88.6 and 83.23 per Litre respectively. Although in several states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra the rates had already crossed over a century mark.
As per the reports, After the government had raised excise duty on fuel to an all-time high in march last year, since then petrol price has increased by a record Rs 22.99 per litre and diesel by Rs 20.93.
“PM Modi was chosen by the people on the promise of ‘ache din’ but with this kind of indifferent approach the concept only seems to be a daydream” said Angat Datta.
