CHANDIGARH : Indian Yuki Bhambri registered a hard-fought three-setter mild upset victory as he overcame a stiff resistance from seventh seed Miximilan Marterer of Germany in the quarterfinal of the $75,000 Challenger Men’s Tennis Tournament (Pingshan Open) in China on Friday. The closely-fought quarter-final contest continued for two hours and eight minutes.
Twenty-four years old Yuki Bhambri, who is ranked 341st, won the first set at 6-3. Miximilan Marterer, 21 years old and ranked 152nd, hit back and levelled the score one set all as he won the second set by 6-3. The third and deciding set was evenly fought before Yuki Bhambri won by 7-5 against his left handed rival to clinch a semi-final spot.
Miximilan Marterer fired nine aces and committed no double fault. He won one break point out of seven. Yuki Bhambri fired half a dozen aces and committed a lone double fault. He converted two break points out of nine.
Yuki's opponent in the semi-final will be second seed Yuichi Sugita, ranked 115th, of Japan. Sugita posted a straight sets 6-2, 6-4 victory against eighth seed Thomas Fabbiano of Italy in another quarter-final match.
