Tarini Goyal finishes tied 5th in National U-19 chess

CHANDIGARH : Chandigarh's Tarini Goyal scored 7.5 points in 11 rounds to secure the joint fifth place in the National U19 (Junior) Chess Championship 2017 which was held in Patna from September 3 to 11. The sixteen-year old Class XI student of Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Chandigarh was awarded for the achievement in presence Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar,
Ajay Kumar Yadav (4.5 points), Vedant Joshi (4 points), and Vedushi Joshi (3 points) were the other players who represented UT Chandigarh in the event.
Nearly 116 boys and 73 girls from over 20 states across the country participated in the Championship. M Mahalakshmi of Tamil Nadu bagged the championship in the girls category with nine points.
Though Tarini played a spirited game and lost just one game, to the Champion Mahalakshmi, some of the draws in the initial games kept her away from the podium finish in this prestigious tournament.
She scored five wins over Aneri of Gujarat ,Sreezzaa Potluri of Tamil Nadu, Sunyasakta of Odisha, Rutuja Bakshi of Maharashtra and Nityata Jain of Madhya Pradesh. She had to settle for draws with the Silver medalist Sakshi Chitlange of Maharashtra, Bronze medalist Isha Sharma of Karnataka, Toshali V of Andhra Pradesh, Srishti Pandey of Maharashtra and Smaraki Mohanty of Odisha.
Appreciating her performance Naveen Bansal , Vice President, Chandigarh Chess Association and Dr Vipnesh Bhardwaj, Honorary Secretary, CCA said that Tarini has the potential to go much further and bring greater pride to the city.
