Bureaucrats replace academicians as VC of three universities in Punjab

CHANDIGARH: Congress government led by Capt Amarinder Singh has handed over the charge of three main universities of Punajb to the bureuacrats, replacing academicians.

Kahan Singh Pannu, Principal Secretary Technical Education has been appointed as officiating Vice Chancellor of Inder Kumar Gujral Punjab Technical University. The post was lying vacant for the last two years. The SAD-BJP government had failed to fill the post due to differences over panel of candidates between the Chief Secretary and Minister of Technical Education Madan Mohan Mittal.

Earlier the state government had arm twisted the Vice Chancellors of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) Amritsar and Punjabi University Patiala and appointed bureacrsts as officiating Vice Chancellors. The charge of GNDU and Punjabi university has been given to Anurag Verma, a senior IAS officer who is principal secretary Higher Education.
