Red Cross signs MoU with Rayat Bahra

MOHALI: The Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) has decided to set up a centre of the IRCS at the Rayat Bahra Univeristy at Mohali. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of Dr Veer Bhushan, Joint Secretary of the Indian Red Cross Society, and Dr Raj Singh, Vice-Chancellor of the Rayat Bahra University in Delhi.

The Indian Red Cross Society and the Rayat Bahra University have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate in building the resilience of communities to disaster and climate change through education, research and awareness programmes, strong emphasis on disaster risk management on natural, manmade hazards and related environmental, technological and health hazards and risk.

The MoU was signed by Dr Veer Bhushan, Joint Secretary of the Indian Red Cross Society, and Dr Raj Singh, Vice-Chancellor of the Rayat Bahra University.

Avinash Rai Khanna, Vice-Chairman, Indian Red Cross Society, was the chief guest at the MOU signing ceremony. Leon Prop, Head, International Federation of Red Cross, and Rene Boeckli, Dy.Head, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), also spoke on the occasion.

The two would work jointly in designing and offering certification, educational programmes in the areas of preventing new risk, reducing existing risk and strengthening resilience, and the focussed areas of collaboration would be disaster risk reduction, mitigation and preparedness, water sanitation and hygiene promotion (WASH), climate change adaptation, environmental management and restoration, and ecosystem based livelihood support.

The IRCS is the largest statutory humanitarian organisation with a network of 36 states and more than 700 branches at State, district and sub-district levels including 35 State/UTs branch and a large number of volunteer network spread throughout the country.
