Punjabi Poet Surjit Gag remanded in judicial custody till July 24

ANANDPUR SAHIB: The controversial Punjabi Poet Surjit Gag, the author of book 'Gag Bani' who was yesterday arrested on blasphemy charges was today produced in court of Ashok Chauhan Civil Judge Senior Division Sri Anandpur Sahib was remanded in PJudicial custodyfor two weeks, till July 24, 2017.

Surjit Gag was arrested under section 295-A of IPC on the complaint of Manager of Takht Kesagarh Sahib, Sri Anandpur Sahib at the behest of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee(SGPC). The Manager had complained to police that Surjit Gag had written derogratory poem quoting Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Surjit Gag was last year expelled from District Ropar Likhari Sabha when he read a poem against alleged corrupt practices of ruling Shiromani Akali Dal in the presence of education minister Daljit Singh Cheema.

The arrest of Surjit Gag who is leftist thinker has stormed the social media. He has got flak from religious groups while certain groups have also supported his writing. He is attacked by Sikhs for insulting Guru Nanak, the first master (Guru) of Sikhs.
