Advisory issued to all schools in Chandigarh to discourage underage driving

CHANDIGARH: Beware! Underage youngsters below the age of 18 will challaned if found at the wheel. The Directorate of School Education, Chandigarh, has directed the District Education Officer (DEO) to issue necessary advisory to all school heads/principals of government, private and public schools of Chandigarh regarding additional directions for improvement of road safety especially school children and ensure implementation of road safety norms in true spirit.
The letter to this effect also further directed to advise the parents/guardians to choose the most suitable, approved, safest and comfortable transportation for their wards/children as per STRAPS.
The management of the school was also directed to ensure that no underage students come to school driving two-wheeler or four-wheeler.
Sources in the education department disclosed that a meeting in this respect was held in the office of the Secretary, Transport, Chandigarh Administration on Thursday where it was decided to implement traffic rules strictly in the city.
Meeting was attended by officials of the education, police and engineering department. In the meeting police were asked to challan those who were found underage. The chief engineer was also directed to complete all cycle track and make these fit for cycling.
The official of the education department while talking to Daily Post said that city’s minor drivers have become a major menace and the problem now threatened to careen out of control. In the recent past underage driving—below the age of 18 at the wheel especially school students—has increased by alarming proportion.
He further said that the purpose of this advisory was to discourage underage at the wheel and it would also provide a clear cut roadmap to school authorities and police department in implementing road of the rules for the protection of children. He also said that the step of the Administration would encourage cycling on city’s roads in the days to come.
What is worrisome is that underage school children who head to schools on wheels but also zip around rashly on the streets and roads. Parents do not think twice before handing over the keys of risk not only risky to children life but also pose danger to others on roads.
