CHANDIGARH: The University Grants Commission has selected Dev Samaj College for Women (DSCW), Ferozepur for the college of excellence status. The status comes with a grant of Rs two crore to be spent over five years for specific purposes. DSCW, Ferozepur is an affiliated college of Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh.

PU Vice Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover congratulated DSCW Ferozepur management, students, teachers & Principal Dr Madhu Prasher for the distinction of attaining the College of Excellence status. He appreciated the leadership of Dr Madhu Prasher and described her as an iconic principal, who joined as the college principal in a young age. Dr. Madhu Prasher took over the affairs of DSCW in 1992 as Principal.

DSCW Ferozepur is one the only three colleges in India, which have been bestowed with this prodigiously prestigious status. DSCW is befittingly deemed the hub of quality education with a long cavalcade of achievements like this highest peak of College of Excellence status.

DSCW was established in the year 1934 by the revered master Bhagwan as a pioneer women institute with the sole objective of empowering the women of nation with the invincible weapon of higher education.

Situated on Indo Pak border a remote backward area, the college has opened the flood gates of higher education to the girls of the region. The college has many accomplishments and accolades to its credit. It got phenomenally high score of 3.74 in its reaccreditation of NAAC (2013-14), a College with Potential for Excellence Status, a star college status. Principal Dr. Prasher was conferred with many
national and state awards.

Dr. Prasher said that DSCW was translating the Skill India dream of the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi by establishing a Skilled Education Center. She described College of Excellence Status to DSCW as the brightest and the biggest in the Galaxy of its various achievements.

Only 72 colleges out of the entire India were eligible to apply for the status of College with Potential for Excellence and College of Excellence in 2016. Henceforth, after many rounds of sedulous scanning, only 3 colleges have been conferred with this prestigious status of College of Excellence. The other two colleges are from Tamilnadu, whereas no college out of the other 29 states could get this covetous
status. On the top of it, DSCW is the only college in Punjab in present year to be awarded with the status of College of Excellence.

While shedding light on the eligibility criteria to become a College with Excellence, the Principal Dr. Madhu Prashar informed that a college with the minimum score of 3.55 in the accreditation of NAAC and with the status of a College with Potential for Excellence was eligible to apply for the status. Even after getting the status of a College with Potential for Excellence, the colleges are not directly
awarded with the status of college of Excellence. It is only DSCW which, due to its hugely meritorious achievements and standards of quality education, has been directly endowed with this scintillating status, she added.

Dr Madhu Prasher credited the leadership of the Punjab Government, PU and the Dev Samaj Management for the success of the college. She particularly thanked Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Parkash Singh Badal and PU VC Prof Arun Kumar Grover. PU Registrar Col. G.S. Chadha (Retd.), Controller of Examinations Prof Parvinder Singh, Honorary Director of Human Resource Development Centre Prof Karamjeet Singh, Director Public Relations Mr. Vineet Punia and Dean College Development of DSCW, Er. Prateek Prashar were also present on the occasion.
