Three Youths Rounded Up in Gopi Murder Case Near Phagwara; SSP Says Breakthrough Soon

PHAGWARA: The Kapurthala Police have detained three youths for questioning in connection with the recent murder of Gopi Nijjar near Subhanpur canal, with Kapurthala Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) stating that the suspects are believed to be close to the assailants and a breakthrough is expected soon.

The case relates to the killing of Gopi Nijjar, who was shot dead by unidentified attackers near the canal a few days ago. According to police sources, the victim had earlier received threats and was even provided police protection for nearly two months, which was later withdrawn. Investigators are now examining whether prior enmity played a role in the murder.

SSP Gaurav Toora indicated that initial findings suggest the possibility of personal rivalry behind the murder. He added that the police are pursuing multiple leads and are hopeful of solving the case shortly. “The individuals detained are being thoroughly questioned. We are close to identifying the main culprits,” he said.

In a broader context, SSP Toora revealed that four murder cases have been reported in the district over the past four months. Of these, three have already been solved, while the Gopi Nijjar murder remains under active investigation. Police claim that significant progress has been made within a short span, including arrests in other recent cases.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Nijjar was allegedly involved in criminal activities, including illegal sand mining, and may have had disputes with several individuals. Police are verifying these angles to establish motive and identify those directly responsible for the killing.

SSP Toora has assured that all aspects of the case are being examined and that strict action will be taken against those found involved. Further disclosures are expected as the investigation progresses.
