SGPC President condemns ban on film 'Sutlej' based on Bhai Khalra's life and atrocities committed against Sikh youth
AMRITSAR: Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, President of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, has strongly condemned the arbitrary removal of the film 'Sutlej', based on the life of Bhai Jaswant Singh Ji Khalra, his unique work for human rights and the atrocities committed against Sikh youth by the police, from the Zee network in India shortly after its release.
Advocate Dhami said that after 1984, the police tortured and martyred thousands of innocent youth and burned their bodies saying they were unclaimed. Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra dedicated his life to bringing that painful period of Punjab's history to the world. With his efforts, thousands of families had hope of justice whose young sons had gone missing. The sad part is that Bhai Khalra, who was the hope of the people, was also martyred by the police.
He said that in this film made on the life of Bhai Khalra, historical facts, human rights and social truth have been brought to the fore, which should be seen and discussed with an open mind instead of being blocked.
He said that efforts to hide the government atrocities committed against Sikhs can never be successful. In those cases where the youths were martyred and burnt as unclaimed, today the honorable courts are giving punishments to the police officers of that time. How will you turn your back on these decisions of the courts?
He said that neither these pages of history can be erased nor can the truth be suppressed through any ban. He said that justice-loving people across the world, including Punjab, have every right to know, understand and learn from their history. In a democracy, banning works that highlight diversity of views and historical truth cannot be justified in any way. This step will be seen as a heinous act of trying to silence the voices that bring out the truth.
The SGPC President demanded that all kinds of bans imposed on the film 'Sutlej' be lifted immediately so that people can understand this important chapter of history for themselves.
