The Commission has asked Ludhiana Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma to explain the progress made in tracing the missing girls, the circumstances of their disappearance, and the preventive steps being taken by police in such cases.
In a formal communication, Raj Lalli Gill, the Chairperson of the Punjab State Commission for Women stated that cases of women and girls going missing under suspicious circumstances are a serious matter and must be investigated by senior-ranking police officers on priority. She further emphasised that ensuring the safety of women is the Commission’s highest priority, and that the body remains committed to safeguarding the security, welfare, dignity, self-respect, and freedom of women.
The development comes amid rising concern over the disappearance of eight minors and one young woman within a span of 48 hours in Ludhiana, with multiple FIRs registered across different police stations. Police investigations so far indicate that the cases are being examined individually, and no common link or organised trafficking network has been established at this stage.
Special police teams have been deployed to trace the missing girls, with officials examining CCTV footage, mobile phone data, and personal contacts. While in some cases preliminary inputs suggest possible voluntary disappearance, several others remain unresolved and under active investigation.
Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said that all cases are being handled on priority and every possible effort is being made to trace the missing girls safely. Authorities have also appealed to the public to avoid speculation and share any credible information that may assist the investigation.
The issue has triggered concern among civil society groups and opposition leaders, who have raised questions over women’s safety and law-and-order conditions in the state. The Commission’s intervention is expected to intensify administrative scrutiny as investigations continue.
Officials said a detailed report will be submitted to the Women Commission within the stipulated deadline, along with updates on recovery efforts and inter-state coordination where required.
