All the victims are reported to be members of the same extended family, who were travelling together for a social visit.
According to preliminary information, the pickup van was on its way from Jalalabad towards Dera Beas when it reportedly lost control while trying to overtake another vehicle on a narrow stretch of road. The van then crashed into an oncoming truck with significant force, leaving the vehicle mangled beyond recognition.
Local residents and passersby rushed to the spot after hearing a loud crash and helped in rescue operations before police teams arrived. The injured were immediately shifted to Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital in Faridkot for emergency treatment. Several of them are stated to be in critical condition.
Officials said that most of the deceased belonged to a group of relatives travelling together, turning what was expected to be a routine journey into a devastating tragedy. Identification of all victims is underway, as some bodies were badly damaged in the impact.
Police from the nearby station have registered a case and initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. The truck driver has been detained for questioning, while the vehicle has been seized.
Senior officials visited the accident site and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased. Preliminary suspicion points to overspeeding and risky overtaking on a poorly lit road stretch as possible factors behind the collision.
The accident has once again raised concerns over road safety on rural highways in the border districts, where heavy vehicles and passenger carriers often share narrow roads with inadequate lighting and signage.
