Gujarat rally to upset MP in a thrilling match in JN Basketball

CHANDIGARH: Gujarat pulled off an upset by snatching a thrilling 73-71 verdict against Madhya Pradesh in a Level I Group A women's fixture in the 69th Junior National Basketball Championship for Men and Women at the Ludhiana Basketball Academy, Guru Nanak Stadium in Ludhiana today.
Gujarat started with a first quarter victory by 22-12 points. Madhya Pradesh hit back to claim the second quarter by 23-15. In a ding-dong third quarter, the teams played a 16-16 draw and at the end of the quarter, Madhya Pradesh were having a slight lead of three points (56-53). However, Gujarat made a splendid recovery and also converted their defecit to surplus at the end of fourth and final quarter by scoring by 20-15 points for an overall lead of 73-71.
Tavleen (22) and Ria (15) were mainly responsible for Gujarat's stunning win. Asmat virtually waged a lone battle as she topscored with 30 for Madhya Pradesh.
In Group B Maharashtra proved too good for Rajasthan whom they defeated by 101-45 101-45 (19-16, 29-13, 32-3, 21-13) points.
In the men's Level I group A outing, Uttar Pardesh fought hard to overcome spirited Chandigarh by 115-92 points. UP won the first quarter by 33-23 and second by 30-16. Trailing by 39-63 at half time, Chandigarh regrouped themselves and won the third quarter by 21-20 while the fourth and final quarter ended in a 32-32 draw. UP won with a difference of 23 points.
UP oweed their triumph to the duo of Akshay (31) and Priyanshu (22). Rahul (32) and Ajmer (26) tried their best but that was not enough for Chandigarh against the earlier onslaught by UP.
Men: Group A: UP (Akshay 31, Priyanshu 22) bt Chandigarh (Rahul 32, Ajmer 26) 115-92 (33-23, 30-16, 20-21, 32-32).
Group B: Delhi (Nitish 27) bt Maharashtra (Suraj 26) 82-79 (18-14, 11-18, 26-14, 27-33).
Group C: Goa (Jeshua 22) bt Puducherry (Sathyavanan 22) 76-50 (12-9, 26-14, 20-18, 18-9).
Group D: Odisha (Sarat 25, Suresh 14) bt Bihar (Yashraj 27, Dharmender 22) 72-66 (16-19, 19-11, 17-15, 20-21).
Women: Group A: Gujarat (Tavleen 22, Ria 15) bt MP (Asmat 30) 73-71 (22-12, 15-23, 16-16, 20-15).
Group B: Maharashtra (Neha 24, Sakshi 14) bt Rajasthan (Yashika 16, Ishika 9) 101-45 (19-16, 29-13, 32-3, 21-13).
