Amritsar beat Chandigarh on first innings lead to lift Dhruv Pandove Trophy

CHANDIGARH: Amritsar defeated Chandigarh on first innings lead of 175 runs to lift the Punjab Inter-District Under-19 Cricket Tournament for the  Dhruv Pandove Trophy  on the last day of finals at I.S. Bindra Stadium PCA in Mohali.  This was a sweet revenge for Amritsar district who had earlier lost to Chandigarh in the league stage of the tournament.

  Resuming at overnight  329 for 4 in 67 overs, Amritsar met with an early reverse as Salil Arora was trapped in front by Jagdeep for 16 with the team’s total reading 335 for 5. Salil Arora’s departure brought in Akashdeep and who in company of Sahil Sharma put on 54 runs for the 6th wicket before Sahil Sharma was castled by Harshit after completing his half century (54) off 93 balls with 10 boundaries. 

Mukesh the next man in then in company of Akashdeep added 32 runs for the 7th wicket before Mukesh was snapped by Lakshay of the bowling of Mandeep for 12 off 29 balls inclusive of 2 boundaries. Arjun Papal then joined Akashdeep and the duo put on 52 runs for the 8th wicket before Arjun papal was caught by Lakshay of left arm spinner Amit Shukla for 14  off 46 balls with one boundary. 

Mandeep then struck twice to have Akashdeep caught by Lakshay for a well made 66 off 121 balls with 6 boundaries and 2 sixes and on the next delivery trapped Dipanshu Chadha in front before the batsman could open his account.  Amritsar’s first innings ended at 468 in 111.2 overs.  The bowling honours for Chandigarh were shared by Raj Angad Bawa (3 for 39), Mandeep Singh  (3 for 74), Jagdeep Singh (1 for 89) and Harshit  (1 for 111).

Trailing by 175 runs on the first innings, Chandigarh opened their second essay with Ayush Gautam and Arjun Azad. Ayush Gautam was the first to go caught by Akashdeep off Sumit Sharma for 10 off 13 balls inclusive of one boundary with the team’s total reading 17 for 1 in 5.3 overs.

Sumit Sharma struck again to have Ayush Sikka caught by Sarthak for 3 and the next man in Mandeep Singh also fell to Sumit Sharma who had him caught by Sahil Sharma for two reducing Chandigarh to 25 for 3 in 7.3 overs.  Mandeep Singh’s departure brought in Raj Angad Bawa who in company of Arjun Azad put on 40 runs for the 4th wicket before Arjun Azad was caught by Sarthak of the bowling of left arm spinner Dipanshu Chadha for 34 off 58 balls with 5 boundaries.

 Raj Angad Bawa was the next to go being caught by Taranvir off Sahil Sharma for 22 off 43 balls with 3 boundaries and one six. At this stage Chandigarh had lost half their side for 80 in 24.1 overs and Amritsar bowlers were scenting an outright win. Jagdeep Singh and Harshit Singh then dug in for 7 overs to realize 29 runs for the 6th wicket before Harshit Singh fell to a catch by Sumit Sharma off Sahil Sharma for 3 with the team’s total reading 109 for 6.

 This brought in opener Ishan Goel to the crease and he alongwith Jagdeep Singh kept the preying Amritsar bowlers at Bay for 7 overs before Jagdeep Singh  was stumped by  wicket keeper Salil Arora off  Arjun Pappal for 49 off 57 balls with 7 boundaries and one six.  Thereafter Ishan Goel in company of Tavleen added 28 runs for the 8th wicket in 11 overs before Ishan Goel was caught by wicket keeper Salil Arora off Akashdeep for 27 off 53 balls with 5 boundaries.  

Tavleen Singh unbeaten 14 and Lakshay unbeaten two saw the day out for Chandigarh.  The match ended with Chandigarh scoring 171 for 8 in 51 overs leaving Amritsar victors on the first innings lead.  The bowling honours for Amritsar were shared by Sumit Sharma (3 for 15), Sahil Sharma (2 for 11) , Arjun Pappal  (1 for 52), Akashdeep (1 for 25) and Dipanshu Chadha (1 for 54).

Former Ranji player and PCA joint secretary Arun Sharma former  gave away the winners Dhruv Pandove trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 1.5 lakh to the Amritsar team while Chandigarh the runners- up team were given a cash prize of Rs. 75,000
