CHANDIGARH: The water level in Pong Dam reservoir is likely to exceed last year’s level at the end of filling season but that may not be case with  Bhakra reservoir  level.

In May and June 2018 both Bhakra and pong reservoirs were at low level and at one stage there was concern whether filling could be achieved this monsoon. Now it is assessed that Bhakra , presently at 1633.79 ft is likely to fill up to 1650 feet . However the position at Pong Dam  is far better as it has a present level of 1367.78  ft  and there is a possibility of achieving full level of 1390 ft by  September 20 the end of filling season.

Last year  at the end of filling season water level at Bhakra reservoir 1668.73 feet while it was 1381.36 at Pong Dam reservoir .

As per present trends Pong level is expected to rise by 1 to 2 ft per day and may reach 1375 ft by  August 31 . The trends of previous years  indicate that in case Pong level on  August 31  is between   1370-1375 , there is  chance of attaining full level of 1390 by end of filling season. However ,if  good monsoon flows continue and level of 1380  is reached by end of August  then BBMB may have to increase power generation at Pong and increase water releases .

In view of low level at Bhakra(1634 feet ) the Bhakra releases would have to be kept at minimum so as to facilitate  maximum reservoir filling up to  end of filling season. At Bhakra reservoir  a level of around 1650 can  be expected by September 20.

It may be mentioned that for purpose of meeting Irrigation requirement during depletion period of October to  June the closing level at the end of filling season  is the important parameter.
