HAMIRPUR: Induction of Anurag Thakur from Hamirpur as a minister of state for Finance in Narendra Modi’s cabinet provides an opportunity to the people of the state to rejoice and it is visible on the faces of people of this constituency. A small towner of the area once known as “Kalapani” has not just done in cricket but also is now ready to take centre stage at national level. His elevation to the post of a minister will change the political equation in Himachal Pradesh but also large the stature of Dhamual family which was at back foot since 2017, feels most of the political leaders. They also said that the state would witness many aftershocks in the days to come.

Hamirpur has been ignored in the larger political discourse of national politics and for the first time Anurag has made it to the central ministry is a moment of pride for the people of the state and definitely will have a bearing on the state politics. While talking to his father Prem Kumar Dhumal said that since formation of the state, Hamirpur has never been given representation in central cabinet and it was the first time that an MP from Hamirpur was inducted in central cabinet. Anurag is capable to shoulder any responsibility, feels he.

His rise at national level is not an accident but he chiseled life his own. Anurag as a political player has been busy in preparing the political pitch along with world class cricket pitch. When it came to giving back to the people he did not think twice. He reached out the people with highly innovative initiatives. His tech push idea provides a solace deep into the rural belts of the constituency. He is a young leader and a Thakur known to take risks and push the envelope in politics, he will definitely impact the power play especially J P Nadda and his fourth consecutive win from the seat with a record margin of 3,90,000 votes has brought the spotlight back on the Dhumal clan.

Hamirpur is a robust constituency that has some key projects such as the state’s first AIIMS in Bilaspur, the Indian Institute of Information Technology, two medical colleges, a central university, Hydro Engineering College, a technical university, five Kendriya Vidyalays, three sanctioned railway lines from Una to Hamirpur, Bhanupali to Bilaspur and Nangal–Una–Talwara, the recent extension of Himachal Express between Delhi and Daulatpur Chowk besides 25 national highways all was done during BJP regime.

Family of former chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal has always remained in the centre of party politics ever since his son Anurag was elected as the BJP MP from Hamirpur in 2008. Before Anurag, Dhumal was the MP from this seat. In this Lok Sabha elections, Union minister Nadda did not address any major rally in Hamirpur parliamentary constituency. Also, for the first time in the last over 10 years, the party’s founder member and former Union minister Shanta Kumar did not attend any party function in Hamirpur after Anurag filed his nomination papers.

Needless to say, Anurag’s poll victory has revived the political career of Dhumal, who lost the last assembly elections in 2017 despite being declared the party’s chief ministerial candidate. On the other, rise of Anurag stature will create more troubles to congressmen of the constituency to protect their political career. Troubles are looming large on the political career of Rajinder Rana who now may find it difficult to protect the political walls of his fort in Sujanpur assembly segment.
