CHANDIGARH: Sunil Jakhar, former CLP leader in Punjab Vidhan Sabha was today appointed President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee(PPCC) replacing Capt Amarinder Singh who has been elected Chief Minister.

Sunil Jakhar son of former Union Minister Balram Jakhar won from Abohar assembly seat successively in 2002, 2007 and 2012 but lost in 2017 assembly elections. He was sidelined in the party after he was replaced as CLP leader in begining of 2016 and was replaced by Charanjit Singh Channi a dalit leader. He remained loyal to Capt Amarinder Singh in his battle against former PPCC president Partap Singh Bajwa. But at the time of nomination for two seats of Rajya Sabha, Jakhar was ignored despite support from Capt Amarinder Singh. Jakhar however was annoyed with Capt Amarinder Singh for half hearted support.

Jakhar's appointment as PPCC president is seen inthe context of caste equations in Punjab and in wake of 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Jakhar is Hindu face of the party and it is believed Hindus had voted for Congress in large number in the recently held assembly elections. Capt Amarinder Singh had supported Jakhar's name for the PPCC post.
