Situation remains tense in Phagwara after attack on Shiv Sena leader

PHAGWARA:  Situation remained tense on Saturday morning with shopkeepers opting to be keep their business establishments closed. A leader of Punjab Shiv Sena Rajesh Palta was attacked by a group of unidentified people in local Balmiki Chowk here on Saturday morning. When the police reached the spot to rescue him, the group pelted stone on cops and also damaged a police vehicle near Valmiki Chowk in Subash Nagar.

When contacted Deputy Commissioner Kapurthala Mohammad Tayab said the situation is under control, but being monitored.

Senior Superintendent of the Police Sandeep Sharma said adequate forces have been deployed to avoid untoward incidents in the city.

Situation in Phagwara has been tense since the “Bharat bandh” in protest of “dilution of the SC/ST Act” on April 2.

Following this, people belonging to the general category protested against the closure of the national highway in Phagwara and demanded an FIR against LIP leader Nangal for allegedly hurting the sentiments of the general community by issuing objectionable statements on April 2.

 A night before Ambedkar Jayanti there was tension in Phagwara on Friday night as activists of Ambedkar Sena (Mool Niwasi) put up two hoardings to 'name' a chowk on National Highway as Sanvidhaan Chowk with Dr Ambedkar's picture on these.

After these hoardings were fixed at around 8 PM, leaders of some Right Wing Hindu groups including factions of Shiv Sena gathered there to oppose the move saying that the action of Dalit body was illegal. Police officials rushed to avert the clash and till before midnight activists of both the aides were standing there.

Officials deployed police personnel I'm good numbers. The town also witnessed some tension during Bandh on April 10 by upper castes as groups of both sides were there in the bazaars but they did not come face to face.

Situation took ugly turn in the town on today when Shiv Sena leader Rajesh Palta was allegedly beaten up by Dalits at Balmiki Chowk here.

The meetings of both communities are being held at separate places. The  hindu activists assembled atr Shri Hanuman Garrhi Shrine complex while the Dalits assembled at Shri Ravi Dass Mandir Chack Hakim. Though after Flag March conducted in the town DC and SSP visited both the places to pacify both groups who remained adamant on their respective stands. Hindu activists alleged partial working of the civil and police administration and demanded immediate transfer of SDM,ADC and SP Phagwara whereas Dalits were seen adamant to install flex board naming Goal chowk as “Samvidhaan Chowk”. D.C. and S.S.P. said the Phagwara Police have booked around 30 unknown persons under relevant sections of IPC on the charges of creating rucks and violating rules of law by blocking highways etc. Six persons including a Head Constable Amardeep Singh, Zimmi Karwal(son of Shiv Sena leader Inderjit Karwal),Yaswant@ Bobby,Jaswinder Kumar, Baljinder, Kulwinder Kumar who sustained injuries were admitted and being treated in civil hospital Phagwara but the injured Bobby was referred to Ludhiana hospital due to serious condition.,

Meanwhile, the visit of Punjab BJP president Shawait Malik to Phagwara to address BJP councillors on Saturday morning has been cancelled owing to the tension.

New Delhi and Lahore bound International buses were diverted from Kartarpur and Phillaur due to continuous tension in the town. Even vehicular road traffic between Ludhiana and Jalandhar was diverted via link roads due to tension. Meanwhile Inspector General of Police Naunihal Singh has also reached Phagwara on Saturday afternoon to assess the situation.

Meanwhile internet services in entire Doaba region have been suspended for next twentyfour hours due to tense atmosphere developed in Phagwara.
