Punjab Power Minister recommends controversial retired CE for post of PSPCL director

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Power Minister Rana Gurjit Singh who is facing charges of grabbing sand mines by proxy auctions has now tagged himself in another controversy over the appointments of two directors in the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited?(PSPCL).

Rana reported to have recommended to Chief Minister name of a controversial retired Chief Engineers N.K.Sharma, protege of former CMD K.D.Chaudhary and ardent supporter of RSS. Sharma has also been indicted alongwith K.D.Chaudhary in an internal probe into the theft of power by Jagbir Singh Sokhi, district president of Shiromani Akali Dal Ludhiana. The Sukhi Steels Private Limited a furnance industry owned by the SAD leader was found stealing power and board had imposed a penality of Rs.13 lakh during the code of conduct but money was not recovered. Later after retirement of Sharma, the fine was revised Rs.1.7 crores. Sharma had allegedly allowed the theft and shielded Sokhi when he was posted Chief Engineer(Distribution) at Ludhiana.

The minister has recommeded the name of Sharma even though Principal Secretary A.Venu Prasad had forwarded the inquiry report against Sharma to the minister for approperiate action. The action of Rana may put the Punjab government under another controversy, if name of Sharma was cleared by Chief Minister who ahs to take final call.

Punjab Government had appointed a three member panel to recommend the names for appointment of Director(Distribution) and Director Commercial. The final names are expected to be announced ina day or so.

According to sources the Power Minister has forwarded the 4 names to the Chief Minister for final selection of two Directors The three member selection committee of Chief Secretary, Secretary Power and Chairman Power Finance Corporation which met on June 2 has recommended the four names for the two posts of directors.

According to sources two retired chief engineers and two serving chief engineers have been recommended. In the selection process the state bureaucracy has played a major role. The likely recommended names include N K Sharma, O P Garg retired chief engineer HRD. The other two recommended names are Ajai Kapoor Engineer in chief (transmission ) in PSTCL and Damanjit Singh Chief engineer IT in PSPCL.
