NAWANSHAHR: Amidst the accusations that drug menace was still coninuing in Punjab, the Chief Minister Capt Amrinder Singh, will re-launch a special crusade against drug abuse on March 23 from Khatkar Kalan, ancestral village of Bhagat Singh, on the occasion of Martyrdom Day of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru.

Stating this here today, DC Amit Kumar said that the CM will administer oath to both government and non-government ‘Drug Abuse Prevention Officers’ (DAPO) who would be recruited shortly on voluntary basis. The DAPOs, in coordination with district administration, would work towards creating awareness among the masses about the pitfalls of drug abuse, besides working for the treatment and rehabilitation of drug addicts. ADC (G) Ranjit Kaur said enrolment for recruiting DAPOs had already been started in the district since March 12 and aspirants could visit the Saanjh Kendras or website www.ppsaanjh.in to get the forms. She said that DAPOs would be given special training with regard to their new assignment and would be provided identity cards.

DC added that the state government would celebrate Martyrdom Day this year as ‘Youth Empowerment Day’ so as to inspire the state’s youth to work for achieving the ideals and philosophy Bhagat Singh and his associates stood for and laid down their lives.

As per DC, CM Capt Amrinder Singh on Martyrdom Day would also dedicate to the public newly constructed first phase of Bhagat Singh’s memorial in Khatkar Kalan. The memorial has special galleries depicting various phase of life of Bhagat Singh, besides a special ‘Punjab Timeline’ depicting contribution of Punjabis to the freedom struggle.

DC, earlier in the day, accompanied by senior civil and police officials, visited Khatkar Kalan and reviewed arrangements related to upcoming Martyrdom Day celebrations there. He also directed the officials to contact family members of Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev to urge them to attend the Day.
