Nawanshahr administration comes to the rescue of suicide prone farmers, students

NAWANSHAHR: Starting a new initiative for changing the mind of desperate and frustrated people including students and farmers, district administration of Nawanshahr (Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar) has decided to provide free counselling to save them from taking any extreme step.

Divulging the details, DC Amit Kumar on Wednesday said that due to the exam phobia or stress, students or debt ridden farmers can take the extreme step like suicide. “By preventing such pessimistic thinking entering their minds, counselling could go a long way and save their lives,’’ he said, adding that “we are engaging a government counsellor and two private counsellors to start the service from next week”. Kumar said that the contact numbers of the counsellors would be propagated through social media and other sources so that needy persons may get the benefit.

Describing the concept of ‘Nivekala Nawanshahr’, he said that it has been chalked out to start new initiatives like skill training, competitive exam coaching, e-library etc to benefit the unemployed youth particularly the drop outs.

Kumar further revealed that in order to provide quality education as per the commitment of state government, Nawanshahr would soon have a Government college. For this purpose, a land measuring five acres has been identified at village Jadla on Chandigarh Road, hesaid.

Divulging more details, deputy commissioner said that department of Public Works has been asked to get complete the requisite formalities regarding costs etc at the earliest possible, so that the construction work may be started after getting all approvals.

He said that the classes would be started from the coming academic session with district administration identifying the temporary arrangements for the same. He said that Nawanshahr SDM Aditya Uppal has already been entrusted with the task of getting completed the required formalities related to the land.

Deputy Commissioner further said that soon an e-library would be set up at Barandari Gardens, Nawanshahr for making available competitive books to the aspirants desirous to crack civil services or other competitive exams. Competitive books as well as computers for online study would be available in this e-library, he added.
