CHANDIGARH: The comments made by Kirpal Singh Badungar President of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee(SGPC) that there is nothing wrong in demanding Khalistan raised a political storm in Punjab. The BJP, the ruling partner of SAD says Badungar's statement amounts to sedition.

During a conversation in a press conference at Amritsar Badungar while replying to a question said that there was nothing wrong if anyone demands Khalisatan. He quoted a Supreme court judgement of March 1,1985 which says raising slogans of Khalistan was not anti-national and nothing wrong in it. The statement of Badungar was assumed to be view point of SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal who understood to have use Badungar to appease radical Sikhs.

Badungar was replying to a question related to election of a Sikh as Mayor of Hoboken city in the US and reacting to alleged ‘labels such as terrorists and Khalistani attached with Sikhs.’

The SAD however maintained silnce on the issue but BJP general secretary Vwennet Joshi joined the issue and called it a sedition. Joshi told Badungar that you were misquiting the Supreme Court statement which was delivered in context to raising of Khalistan slogans after operation blue star by some Sikhs in sector 17 Chandigarh. The Supreme Court had said that mere raising slogans are not wrong unless it attracts violence.

Joshi said that the atmosphere in Punjab is disturbed in light of killings of Hindu leaders and talking about separatists agenda at this moment would be against the interests of Punjab. He said that in other countries it might be acceptable but it is not accepatable in India.

AAP maintained that India was a democratic country and constitution gives the right to people to express their view point freely. The AAP spokesman said that it is the BJP which shall be questioned for curbing the voice of people. If such talk cause any violence then it is condemnable, the spokesman Karnail Singh said in an TV debate.
