3 Months on, PU yet to act in sexual harassment case

CHANDIGARH:Three months after the Punjab University committee Againts Sexual  Harassment (PUCASH) Submitted a report, holding a faculty member of the dental college guilty of sexual harassment, the university has failed to take  action against the faculty member.

According to the sexual harassment of woman at workplace (Prevention,  Prohibition and  redressal) Act, 2013, the employer or district officer  is obliged to act on the recommendations within 60 days.

“The process is under progress however, the details cannot be shared because of confidentially of the matter “said Renuka  Salwan, spokesperson of the punjab university. The committee has recommittee a major penalty under the  service rules of the university.

The report submitted by PUCASH Was tabled before the university ‘s syndicate on the may 26 however the discussion on the matter did not take places as it was  decided the prominent  issues  will be discussed in the next meeting . The final decision on the quantum of punishment to the faculty member will be decided by the senate the highest decision making body of the university.

“As advised, the faculty member has not been coming to the collage till the probe is over. Earlier he was on earned leave . However he has contonued to be leave after his Els exhausted,” said Jagat Bhushan, principal of Dr HSJ  Institute  of dental sciences. The faculty member was found guilty in more than a dozen cases of sexual harassment. The first complainst against the faculty member was field on march 6, 2018.

According to the PUCASH report, the primary compainant had gone to the faculty member ‘s room to show  her practical work on march 5, 2018 The faculty member started enquiring about  her family ‘s medical ‘s history since the  complainant was coughing. After the complainant  told him that the she was suffering from chest congestion for a week, the faculty member said  he would  examine her and then he asked her to shunt the door,  he then touched her inappropriately. Disturbed the incident, the complainant  told her parents about it.

After  the compLainat, 12 other students gave their statements in writing  alleging sexual harasmeny by the same faculty member . The  committee took these statemnet on record . Other  students who had come forward after the primary complainant field her complaint submitted before the committee that they they were scared  that their complaint  would affect hteir grades and that s why they did not complaint  when the incident happenend The committee then resolved to consider all  the complaints from september 2017.
