CHANDIGARH: In the first phase of the proposed ‘Bijli andolan’ launched by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) against high power tariff in the state, the Punjab unit leadership on Monday submitted memorandums to chief minister captain Amarinder Singh in various districts in the state through their respective deputy commissioners.

Under the leadership of senior party leader and LoP Harpal Singh Cheema, meetings were held with party workers and cadres at Ludhiana and Kurali (Mohali) where they were forced to high rate of electricity in the state due to anti-people and anti-Punjab policies of the subsequent governments lording over the state.

Later, the local leadership at Mohali and Ludhiana submitted memorandums to their Deputy Commissioners in this regard and demanded that the ruling government led by Captain Amarinder Singh should deliver on its promise to provide affordable electricity to the people of the state. They also demanded scrap of the anti-state agreements entered into between the previous BJP-SAD government and the private power players.

They said that before assuming power in the state in 2017, Captain Amarinder Singh had promised cheaper electricity to all sections of of people of Punjab, saying that nothing tangible had come out of the discourse as they were still paying more than what other states were paying, which was on the higher side. Citing example of the Delhi government led by Arvind Kejriwal, they said that all kinds of consumers were paying the cheapest rate of electricity in the country.

They further said that the agreements signed by the previous government stood to incur a loss of Rs 2800 crores per year, ending up with a total loss of 70 thousand crores in the coming 25 years, even if they produced not even a single unit of power. They demanded that Captain Government should immediately cancel the anti-state agreement, to fulfill his poll promise made to the people to provide power to all kinds of consumers at affordable rate, failing which AAP would be forced to launch a statewide protest.
