India Against Corruption volunteers Association organized Seminar on Urgent Electoral Reforms

NEW DELHI : India Against Corruption volunteers Association (IACVA) a conglomerate of committed IAC volunteers who have very recently got reorganized under the aegis of Shri Anna Hazare Organized Seminar on Urgent Electoral Reforms at Delhi, India Habitat Center. Non political, Social and RTI activist among 15 states attended this seminar. Transparency in the election process & do away with party Symbols from EVMs was the key issue. Because of Anna Hazare's sudden ill health, he could not attend this seminar, a video message sent by him was read in the house.
Speakers from across various faculties participated in the seminar. Prominent among them was former Chief Election Commissioners of India from Chennai Mr.TS Krishnamurthy and Dr N Gopalaswamy, Ex-IAS and Founder Loksatta from Hyderabad Mr. Jaya Prakash Narayan, Founder Trusty ADR and Ex-Faculty IIM Ahmedabad, from Delhi Prof Jagdeep Chhokar, Writer, Editor, Journalist and Film Maker from Mumbai Mr. Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India, Delhi Mr Fali Nariman, and as Special Guest Legal Advisor, Election Commission of India Mr SK Mendiratta, & Mr. K.G Rao.
At the Delhi seminar renowned journalist Fali S Nariman asserted that “a movement of the kind Anna Hazare led in 2011 and the momentum it gained is required now to bring both electoral and systemic reform”. He added: “We believe in Lokpal: The Act is there but there’s no Lokpal. The excuse given by the Attorney General to Supreme Court is that there is no leader of opposition so we cannot appoint a Lokpal. It is a peculiar logic. The problem is that no one wants a Lokpal. “He said any person against whom charges were framed in a case should not be allowed to contest an election.
Former cabinet secretary TSR Subramanian said “politics is a black market industry” and, hence political parties don’t want a system that could bring in checks and balances.
