GNDU wins Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy for 2017-18

AMRITSAR: After a gap of six years, the Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) of  Amritsar has clinched prestigious Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy for 2017-18.

Repeating the history, GNDU has made claims over the MAKA trophy for the 23rd time leaving behind Punjabi University, Patiala and Panjab University, Chandigarh.

A delegation led by vice chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh Sandhu will receive the trophy from President of India at Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi on September 25. The vice chancellor will be joined by registrar Dr. Karanjeet Singh Kahlon, Director, Sports Dr. Sukhdev Singh and assistant director Dr. Kanwar Mandeep Singh Dhillon.

In a release issued here today, sharing details about achievement, VC Dr Jaspal Singh Sandhu informed that various universities from all over the country take part in the competition for MAKA trophy but it is our hard determination and dedication that we bagged the trophy number of times.

GNDU has reclaimed the trophy after a gap of six years after garnering 107745 points to break a six-year stranglehold of Punjabi University, Patiala.

In the meet of universities, Punjabi University with a total of 88840 points stood second and Panjab University, Chandigarh managed to gain third place with 71712 points. “It was proud moment for our students and faculty that we re-claims MAKA”, said Dr Sandhu.

The competition for MAKA trophy was commenced in 1956-57 and is given to the university with best all round performance annually. The winner honours with a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh and trophy.

The MDU, Rohtak of Haryana stood fourth with 29025 points, Kurukshetra Univerity on fifth position with 21840 points followed by Mangalore University with 10825 points and University of Calcutta with 3450 points.
