CHANDIGARH: The BJP today alleged that Capt Amarinder Singh-led Congress government in Punjab was playing with the future of SC students as it was reluctant to send Audit Report of the fund received for Post Matric Scholarship to the Union Government.

This was stated by BJP national secretary Tarun Chugh after a meeting with Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Thawar Chand Gehlot. Chugh raised the issue of non distribution of Post Matric Scholarship to eligible SC students with the Minister.

Slamming Congress government for its indifferent attitude on this highly sensitive issue, Chugh told the concerned minister that Punjab has a SC population of around 33 percent but the government had not cared to disburse the Scholarships pertaining to the years 2016-17 and 2017-18.

He told the minister that due to the apathetic and insensitive attitude of the government thousands of SC students have been forced to leave studies midway.

Chugh said, “The Minister informed me that the Union government has done its duty and sent the funds to the state government for the years 2016-17 land 2017-28 so that the studies of eligible students are not hampered due to paucity of funds but the Punjab government has not sent utilization certification regarding the Rs.1286-crore funds it received for the purpose even as the Punjab government knows that it was compulsory for the state governments to send utilization certificates for the grants received.”

The BJP leader alleged that the SC students were facing a hard time as some colleges managements have taken tough stand as they also could not cope with this kind of financial crisis but this was was having an impact on the studies and the future of the students.”

Chugh urged Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh to order the concerned minister and officers to immediately send the utilization certificates to the centre so that the matter gets resolved and the students can heave a sigh of relief.
