PU to hold theater show as tribute to Balwant Gargi from April 3 to 8

CHANDIGARH: Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh would host a theatre show to commemorate the birth centenary of legendary Playwright & Theatre Director and Padam Shree Awardee Balwant Gargi from April 3 to April 8 at the Department of Indian Theatre at 6.30 PM daily.

The Play “Dhooni Di Agg” is being jointly organized by PU Balwant Gargi Commemoration Committee; Office of the Dean Student Welfare and Department of Indian Theatre at the Studio Theatre-1 of the Indian Theatre at PU. Mr. Gargi is considered as the most important signature in Punjabi literature. He worked in PU as Professor and Director. He founded the Department of Indian Theatre, which is the most favourite University Theatre Institute in India since 1972.

The 100 minutes Play “Dhooni Di Agg” has been directed by Pali Bhupinder Singh. The Play is a story of the fierce jealousy and fight between two women Veena & Rita to reach out a man Ajit. Ajit is living with Veena and Rita is his ‘ex’ who is now back into the story as she is unable to forget the days she spent with Ajit in England. Her desire to get Ajit back has become so wild that one day she decided to adopt the insect root where after the matting female insects kill their male parts; like their counterpart is now safe within their womb. This is a wonderful script written by the great master Gargi and is considered as one of the best Punjabi Plays.

The Vice Chancellor of PU Prof Arun Kumar Grover has declared the Birth Centenary of Balwant Gargi as a year-long celebration which will include a Documentary on Gargi which will cover his contribution to the world of Indian Theatre; Punjabi Literature; Seminars/Conference and International Conferences; Play productions; publishing the fresh edition of Gargi’s important works; and an archive to preserve and promote the
valuable materials and works of the unique personality’s educative stay on PU Campus. In addition, University has initiated the process of bringing out a colourful stamp by the postal authorities of Government of India.

The set designing is by Satnam Ladi; Costumes & Dresses by Shilpa Kumar; Property Management by Balwinder Singh; Make-up & Cast Look-up is by Zaleel Khan; Theme Track & Background Score by Sharanjit Shanu; Background Score Operation by Kuljinder Singh; Light Designing & Operation by Karan Gulzar; Light Arrangement Support is by Ravi Kumar,  Manish Malhotra and the Students of MA II Department of Indian Theatre. Tejinder Singh is Production Coordinator of the play production.
