The mysteries of the unknown have always fascinated the human mind. Experts have always commented that India is a beautiful country with a lot of history, mysterious stories of palaces, their kings, their treasures and those who dies a painful death. Lot of forts and palaces in India remain today with their history, twist of mystery attached to them.
Traveller’s who love the adrenaline rush and push their boundaries and take a peak to what’s happening in the strange and mysterious world out there. Sounds of screams or silent disappearances – you’ll never know what goes on inside some of the most haunted places in India, after the sun goes down. These places are located every where from North to South and East to the West.
Following are a few known haunted places in India :
1. Kuldhara, Rajasthan
Rajasthan Tourism was one of the first ones to advertise ‘haunted tourism’ and they had come with a campaign to promote ‘Kuldhara’. ‘Kuldhara’ is a town 20 kms west to Jaislmer and known to be one of the most haunted places in India, this was not a very popular place to visit in the tourist itineraries. The legendry story says that this was a prosperous village inhibited by the Paliwal Brahmin community was abandoned overnight. The Prime Minister of Jaisalmer state, Salim Singh had eye’s on the village chief’s daughter. The chief oppesed the match and minister had threated to levy prohibitive taxes for the villages. The Village chief did not want to compromise the family nor their community honour decided to abandon the village overnight. No one saw the villagers leave or their whereabouts later. Today the town remains abandoned, gets are shut post sunset and tourists are allowed to visit the abandoned village during the day.
2. Agrasen ki Baoli, New Delhi
This is a 60 meter long and 15 meter wide step well which was built long time ago, there are no historical records so as to when was the step well made. The historical step well is located on Delhi’s Hailey Road and is believed to have been built by King Agrasen around Mid 14th century. People believe that the intensity of the unnatural vibrations increase around as you step down the 108 steps of the well. Locals believe that the water has powers to entice people to jump in the well and take their own lives.
3. Dumas Beach, Surat
Yes, Gujarat has a haunted beach. Dumas beach near Surat is popular for its black sand and silver waters. This beach in Surat, considered to be one of India’s most haunted places and is believed to have been used as a Hindu burial ground earlier and people say that spirits still lurk here at night. There have been rumors of tourists going missing post midnight stroll and dogs barking on the beach are a sign giving indication of presence of some evil spirits.
4. Bhangarh Fort, Rajasthan
This is a 17th century fortress in Rajasthan. There are a couple of stories of the fortress which still live on today. According to one of them, a hermit named Baba Balau Nath lived within the fort area and Emperor Madho Singh had asked him for permission to build the city. The saint gave a conditional approval stating that the shadow of the Emperor’s palace should never fall on his retreat. Failing this the city would turn into ruins – and so it happened. People claim to have heard screams emerge from within the fort and belive that anyone who visits post sundown does not live to tell the tale.
Jay Kantawala from WIYO Travel commented that there are several places in India which are considered as haunted, some are the old Haveli’s / Palaces, Old Cloth Mills, Hotels and some other places, however they mystery remains if these are actually haunted or a myth.
