Guru Nanak Dev University Budget Estimates for year 2019-20 approved

AMRITSAR: The Senate and Syndicate of the Guru Nanak Dev University approved the Budget Estimates of 481 Crore 72 Lac and 91 thousand for the year 2019-20.  University would spend 53.44 per cent amount on further improvement in Teaching, Allied Teaching, Research and Education. It was specially mentioned that this year also more financial assistance in form of scholarships will be provided to deserving students so that they could also get higher education to contribute in the development of the Country.

Prof. Jaspal Singh Sandhu, Vice-Chancellor presided over both the meetings and Prof. Karanjeet Singh Kahlon, Registrar presented the agenda in both the meetings. The members congratulated Prof. Sandhu and University Administration for presenting a balanced budget.

During the financial year 2018-19, the University has spent Rs. 2 crores 43 lac 52 thousand to help the economically backward and intelligent students in form of fee concessions. Similarly, Rs. 4 lac and 80 thousand were spent to help the handicapped students in the form of scholarships. Other special scholarships and facilities in terms of financial help were also provided to sports personalities and student-artists to encourage them to participate in cultural and sports activities.

During this financial year, University would spend 53.44 per cent of the total budget on Teaching, Allied Teaching, Research and Education. Similarly, 14.00 per cent would be spent on non-teaching departments, 10.60 percent on general administration, 4.13 percent on the conduct of examinations, 13.60 percent on miscellaneous (teaching, non-teaching and others) and 4.23 percent would be spent on construction purposes.

Guru Nanak Dev University would establish Centralized Purchase Cell with Seed Money of Rs.50 lacs to make purchases of various Departments of the University. This would also control the budget. The University would also establish the Department of Mass Communication, Department of Agriculture, Directorate of Evening Studies, Directorate of Online Studies from this Academic session to provide job opportunities in various fields.   

Grants of Rs. 19 crore were received from various funding agencies and schemes by teachers of various departments during 2018-19 for various research projects. As many as 500 research scholars are conducting research in various subjects with the grant received from various funding agencies under different schemes.

Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, New Delhi has also sanctioned Rs. 2 Crore 16 Lac  to Food Science and Technology under DST, Purse Programme. Similarly,   UGC released  Rs. 62 Lacs out of sectioned Rs. 1 Crore grant per annum for Human Resource Development Centre. Due to persistent efforts of Vice-Chancellor , University has also received a grant of Rs.2 Crore 85 Lacs out of Rs.25 Crore grant sectioned by Ministry of Youth Affair and Sports (MYAS), New Delhi. During last years University has received a grant of Rs. 5 Crore 45 Lacs under RUSA scheme.

Prof. Sandhu also informed the house about the achievements of the University in the field of research, education, culture, sports and excellent campus placements during this year. He said that during 2018 University won Overall  First Runners-up trophy of North Zone Inter-University Youth Festival and Overall Second Runners-up in All India InterUniversity National Youth. In the field of sports, apart from winning  All India Championship in Cricket (Men), Football (Women), Fencing, Judo and track cycling, University received prestigious award MAKA trophy 23rd times from the President of India.

He said that University will award Honoris Causa Doctorate Degrees at its 45th Annual Convocation of the University to  Sh. Raja Randhir Singh, Life Vice -President, Indian Olympic Association in the field faculty of Sports Medicine & Physiotherapy and Dr Gurtej S. Sandhu, Senior Fellow  and Director, Micron Technology Inc.( he is also University Alumini) in the Faculty of Sciences.

He said that the Centre for IT Solutions will start Full/part-time Diploma and Certificate courses in academic session 2019-20 with Collaboration of University of South Florida .  With  this Centre   for Entrepreneurship and Innovation would be established. He said that +1 and +2 Students will also admitted to Constituent Colleges of the University.

Keeping view 550 celebrations of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji,   Regional Campus, Fattu Dhinga ( Sultanpur Lodhi ) will be converted to Constituent College and renamed if so desired by the Govt of Punjab was also approved in the meetings. Both the  Meetings also gave the approval to start New courses and also discontinuation of some courses already running in various Colleges. The Syndicate also approved 34 PhD thesis.

Prof. Sandhu also thanked the members and University fraternity for their cooperation and guidance for the more upliftment of the University. On this occasion,   in both the meetings a large number of Syndics and Senate members were present.
