CME on sleep related problems held

CHANDIGARH: As many as 25 doctors and specialists attended a CME on sleep related problems at Ojas Hospital, Panchkula today. The CME was organized to discuss sleep related diseases besides helping other specialists to recognize these problem in patients with common tests such as sleep study and general health checkup.

Addressing CME, Dr. Sunny Virdi consultant-Pulmonary said that sleep related problems like excessive snoring lead into severe breathing issues during sleep which are called Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)  and Central sleep apnea (CSA) . These are the diseases which occur in accordance with other disorders such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, kidney disease, stroke etc.

He said further that in OSA and CSA there is decreased delivery of air to the deeper parts of lungs leading onto decreased oxygen in body resulting in direct stress to heart  and brain.

Dr. Virdi said that a newly opened sleep lab at Ojas which is best in tricity is used in diagnosing these disorders at an early stage which helps the doctors to manage these diseases.

He also requested doctors and general public not to ignore the common symptoms of this disease such as excessive snoring , chocking of breath during sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness , unrefreshing sleep and unexplained variable blood pressure at young age.

Meanwhile other specialists also shared their concerns regarding the poor awareness of this disease and increasing burden of the disease day by day.
