PATIALA: A deputation of over a dozen sarpanches, panches besides some prominent people of villages in the vicinity of the Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital today met the new management team of the Gian Sagar Educational and Charitable Trust and demanded that the work of re-opening of the Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital be speeded up keeping in view the medical and healthcare needs of the people of the area.

They were apprised by the new management team that work for revival of the Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital, which had been taken over by the JSB Group, had gained momentum and the hospital was likely to start its outpatient departments (OPDs) from August 16.

Capt Amarjeet Singh Jaijee, the official spokesman of the Gian Sagar Hospital, said that some disgruntled elements had been creating problems in smooth restoration of operations of the medical college and hospital. They had been spreading rumours to mislead the employees. They had been holding demonstrations and protests despite a court order restraining them from doing so.

He assured the village seniors that the new management was alive to the healthcare needs of the people of the area and process of hiring of doctors, paramedics and other support staff had already been initiated and was now going on in full swing.

The Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital had been closed down on April 5, 2017. Costly equipment worth crores of rupees had gone missing from the hospital and college campus and the police had been informed about this. The punjab government had constituted a special investigation team which was looking into the matter, Capt Jaijee told the delegation.

The deputation members assured the management of all support and cooperation in revival of the premier healthcare institution.
