GURDASPUR: The viral sex video of SAD leader Sucha Singh Langah has over shadowed the election campaign for Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat where public issues have taken the back seat. It would help the ruling Congress to divert the attention of people from real issues.

The registration of rape case against Langah has virtually changed the course of campaigning, from serious issues to mud-slinging and cheap entertainment at rallies. It would have been difficult election for Congresss due to its dismal performance in the first six months of governance. The Congress has made good use of the opportunity and escaped questiining by people of the constituencing on issues like farm loan waiver, farmer suicides, unemployment, deteriorated law and order and poor economic status of government. There is no talk on social welfare issues like delayed oldage and widow pensions, non-payment of salaries to employees and no ration for beneficieries of Atta-Dal scheme.

The illgal sand mining and alleged involvement of senior minsiter Rana Gurjit Singh in acquiring sand mine contracts through his employees is not discussed at public meetings except by AAP leaders who are trying to focus on real issues. The Congress has turned its guns on Langah and SAD-BJP candidate Swaran Salaria's personal life. Salaria too faced rape charges in Mumbai though his case is pending for legal scruitiny.

The issue of sacrilege of holy Guru Granth Sahib dueing the SAD-BJP regime is no more an election issue. SAD government had failed to trace accused of sacrilege cases and nobody questions them on sensitive issue. The star campaigner of SAD-BJP Sukhbir Singh Badal has no serious issues to discuss except for imaginary development during ten years of SAD-BJP rule. He gives no explanation for defeat of his party in last assembly elections and he also has no explanation on rape charges on one of his favourite minister whome he was protecting on corruption charges and misapproperiation of public funds.

The three key parties Congress, AAP and SAD-BJP alliace are serious contenders for different reasons and they have high stakes from Gurdaspur election. Congress if wins the election will be able to shut the mouth of critics who are blaming it for non-performance, the election will be a comeback for the SAD-BJP and revival for AAP.

Congress has fielded an outsider PPCC president Sunil Jakhar. Would the local voters accept him is the key of his success. SAD-BJP candiate Swarn Salaria is though local but living in Mumbai and his success only depends of Modi factor if worked in constituency with high Hindu population. AAP candidate Maj General Suresh Khajuria is a local and highly respected among locals. There is large strength of Ex-servicemen in this constituency. He may win if good sense prevailed among voters.
