JALANDHAR : On the 4th day of DST Sponsored INSPIRE Camp Dr. Bhajan Singh from Department of Physics, P.U. Patiala specially came to grow the occasion Principal Dr. Gurpinder Singh Samra and Dr. Arun Dev Sharma Head Biotechenology welcomed him with flowers and momento. Dr. Bhajan Singh delivered his talks on “Radiation Pollution”. He told all radiation came from Universe, however some radiation are man made. He introduced the concept of Universe and Milkway. He said that our universe has been originated from ‘Big Bang’. We various evidences in support of this. He told that Radioactive radiation might be natural and man made. He also discussed the concept of ‘God Particle’ and Large Hardon Colides (LHC) and Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Detector. He discussed that as man had started making use of more and more radiation that results in Radiation Pollution. Again in this there are two form man made and natural radiation pollution.
The disadvantages of Radioactive radiation include natural and man made. Man made disadvantages include Terrorism, threat and Accident. He mentioned with example like Hiroshima and Nagasaki (terrorism), threat (North Korea) and accident like three mile (19791 and Fukushimal Accident in Japan 2011). He also discussed various agencies for radioactive control IAEA, ICRU, NCRP and AERB. He also discussed the advantages of radioactive radiation in different field of Industry, Agriculture and medicine. In industry we can check cracks in walls and underground pipes using radiation and under water flow. In agriculture these can be used to know the quality and age of tree. In Medical field they can be used for diagonostic purpose like CT Scan, X-Ray and Photon Scan etc. They are successfully used in treatment of cancer.
The second lecture was delivered by Dr. Bijay Singh from PAU Ludhiana. He was welcomed by Principal Dr. Gurpinder Singh Samra and Dr. Arun Dev Sharma (Head Biotech). Dr. Bijay Singh delivered his talk on topic ‘Nitrogen, Food Production and Climate change’. He told that modern Food Security is major concern as there is 90% hunger related death i.e. 1 in 5 people die with hunger in developing countries. He discussed that for Global food security most renewable resource is crop production. For raising yield in crop we need Nitrogen that is fulfilled nitrogen Fertilizer. The non-judicial use of N2 fertilizer creating water Hazard as well as climate change. Climate change is bring by Green House effect. The Green House gases increased the Global temperature of earth above the average limit. Actually Plant can only use Nitrogen in the form of Nitrous oxide (N2O). The N2O have life in environment of 120-150 day and its heat trapping efficiency is 296 times of CO2. Therefore the N2 fertilizer are highly harmful to environment. Therefore, we should avoid indiscriminate use of N2.
