Ar. Irwindeep Singh and Ar. Arpan delivered technical lecture on Affordable Housing – A Key to Future. The purpose of the day is to reflect on the state of our cities and towns and the basic human right to adequate shelter. It also aims to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the habitat of future generations. Affordable home refers to housing units that are affordable by that section of society whose income is below the median. Different countries have different definitions for affordable housing, but it is largely the same, i.e. affordable housing should address the housing needs of the lower or middle income households. Disposable income of the people remains the primary factor in determining the affordability. As a result, it becomes the increased responsibility of the government to cater to the rising demand for affordable housing. Affordable housing is gaining its pickup internationally as well as in the national agenda of developing countries. With housing recognized as a basic need, governments at every level are discussing ways and means to provide access to cost-effective housing for their citizenry.
The students of Architecture also displayed their artistic skills. An exhibition was also organized displaying the paintings and art work of the students.
Charanjit Singh Channi (Chairman, CT Group) said, "Each year, World Habitat Day takes on a new theme to promote sustainable development policies to ensure shelter for all – often promoting one of UN-Habitat's focal areas such as inclusive housing and social services; a safe and healthy living environment, with consideration for children, youth, women, elderly and disabled; affordable and sustainable transport and energy; and job creation.”
