CHANDIGARH: Taking a serious note of the defacement of Gurdwara Sahib in Calgary (Canada) by some unscrupulous elements, Punjab Convener Aam Aadmi Party Gurpreet Singh Warraich appealed the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to immediately intervene to protect life, properties and religious liberty of teh Sikhs residing abroad.

Gurpreet Singh said that it is shocking that while the cases of hate crimes against Sikhs are increasing rapidly, Indian government has grossly failed to take up the matter with the respective governments abroad, talking of advocacy for the protection of life, liberty and property of Sikhs is a distant dream. Despite consistent attacks on Sikh community living in foreign countries, particularly after the unfortunate 9/11 New York terrorist strikes, Indian government did not find it suitable to take up effective measures to stop these incidences. Had the Prime Minister been serious about the safety and security of Sikhs residing abroad, the issue would have been on his priority list and could have provided a solution easily as he a frequent flyer.

Gurpreet Singh said that such incidences lower the morale and confidence of the Sikhs living away from their country and it is the moral duty of Indian Government to fight for their rights and restore their confidence. Further, he said that SGPC which is the prominent Sikh organization has failed to create awareness among the masses globally about the different identity of Sikhs. It is the duty of the SGPC also to stand up for the safety and security of the Sikhs and Sikh Gurdwaras abroad.
