DC Amit Kumar Flags Off Awareness March From Civil Surgeon Office

NAWANSHAHR: An awareness march flagged off from local civil surgeon office to observe world leprosy day, today. Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar while flagging of the rally, said that the world leprosy day happens on the same day as the sacrifice of Mahatama Gandhi, which taught us a lesson to not to discriminate with any leprosy patient, instead to get treat him/her with humanity.
Deputy Commissioner said that rather we should guide these patients with right direction of treatment available at government hospitals, free of cost. He calls for need of helping hand towards these patients instead of discrimination with the fact that it can be prevented, treated and cured. He said that during his lifetime, Mahatma Gandhi also worked tirelessly towards the betterment of people afflicted with leprosy.
Civil Surgeon Dr. Gurinder Kaur Chawla said that It is an infectious chronic disease that targets the nervous system, especially the nerves in the cooler parts of the body - the hands, feet, and face. She asserted that one should not get panic after the appearance of symptoms of the leprosy rather he should visit nearby government hospital to get its treatment. She added that Leprosy is caused by an infection with Mycobacterium leprae or M. lepromatosis bacteria. She said that Health Department was observing Leprosy awareness fortnight from January 30 to February 13 so that common strata could be made aware of the disease that is curable. She said that under National Leprosy Eradication Program, a free treatment from six months to one year tenure, has been provided to the patients identified, at government hospitals at free of cost.
Others who were present during the awareness march, included ACS Dr. Balwinder Singh, District Immunisation Officer Dr. Davinder Dhanda, SMO Nawanshahr Dr. Harvinder Singh, Dr. Rajesh Kumar District T.B. Officer.
