SLSA Chandigarh hikes income limit for legal aids

CHANDIGARH : While cost of justice is slipping out of the hands of common man, the legal conscious, State Legal Services Authority (SLSA), Chandigarh, came to the rescue of more people those find it difficult to seek justice. The Authority has decided to take legal free services to the common man who has been on the sideline of justice all these years. In a bid to bring more and more people under its ambit of free legal services, the Authority has hiked three-time income limit for seeking legal aids. It has amended the income limit and hiked the income limit from Rs one lakh to Rs three lakh.
While talking to member secretary of the Authority, Mahavir Singh, told the Daily Post that the necessary amendment has been made and letter to this effect has been sent to the Chandigarh Home Department to issue necessary notification. Now residents whose annual income did not exceed Rs 3 lakh would be entitled to free legal aid, he added.
He further stated that earlier, only those whose income did not exceed Rs one lakh can avail free legal aids from the authority and added that with passes of time, it necessitated to hike the income limit for seeking free legal services. Haryana has already made a hike in the income limit to this effect. All the eligible persons could get free legal aids in shape of lawyer’s fee, court fee, expenses of witnesses, preparation of the paper book, obtaining certified copy of judgements, orders and evidence etc, he said.
Under Legal Services Act 1987 following persons belonging to SC or ST; victim of human trafficking, women and children, mentally retarded or disabled, victims of disaster, riots, flood, earth quack or industrial workers and person under arrest are entitled to avail free legal aids to file case or contest cases in any court. The Authority has a panel of 65 advocates those provided legal services in different types of cases, he said. “
Mr Singh also revealed that while keeping the safety and dignity of woman in view, in case of woman, there was no income limit irrespective of her financial status. Any woman can seek free legal services/aids from the Authority, he adds. Besides, the Authority also runs 20 Schemes under these schemes financial assistance is being provided to the eligible, he says.
For obtaining free legal aids in the High Court, he said, that anyone who was eligible for free legal aids could file an application before the member secretary, SLSA or the secretary High Court Legal Services Committee to get free legal aids.
