CHANDIGARH: In the interest of students, the Punjab Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisations (PFUCTO), a body that includes teachers of GNDUTA, PCCTU, PUTA, GCTA, PAUTA and GADVASU, has decided not to go ahead with its earlier call for mass casual leave and state level rally at Chandigarh on August 29.

Dr. Jagwant Singh, general secretary of the PFUCTO, said, ‘Though teachers are deeply concerned about the debilitating impact of the steep reduction in public funding on higher education, particularly its effect on the implementation of the long awaited UGC pay-scales under the Seventh Pay Commission, we cannot lose sight of the interests of our students who have lost a number of days of studies due to the prevalent law and order situation in the region.’

He added that it has been decided that instead of the mass casual leave and rally programme, the executive members of all the constituent associations of PFUCTO will hold a dharna in the Panjab University, Chandigarh on Aug 29. Teachers will meet their classes but wear black badges as a mark of protest against the anti-teacher and anti-higher education attitude of the Central and state governments.

However, there is no change in the All India Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisations’ (AIFUCTO) call to teachers to assemble at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi on Teachers’ Day - Sept 5 and court arrest to highlight all the serious issues concerning higher education.
